In honor to #3

As Jess C. Scott once said, friends are the family you choose. Last weekend, two family members I was given the choice to pick, came to visit from DR.

I met Steph (mi morena) when I went to take my admissions test at INTEC, the college we graduated from. And at my first class I met Jelisse, my human diary and agenda planner during my student life. We became inseparable, and ever since we always sat next to each other, studied together and eventually graduated with the highest honors.

Given that they were my life savers during the process to accomplish #3, get a college degree, I decided to dedicate this post and our last weekend adventures to this achievement.

My cousin and life sister Jeimy, also joined us in the journey of this unforgettable weekend. SIDE NOTE: She was a great help in my student life as well.

Everything started on Thursday night, at 11:30 PM, when Jelisse arrived at my place. I was so excited for what was to come that, at that same time, we traveled an hour from my house to pick Steph up. This mini road trip brought us back home at 2:00 AM, to take a small nap till 7:00 AM.

Whatever, we are young!

Based on the places either of us had ever been before, I planned the trip as follows:

Grand Central Station
Love Sculpture
Socrates Sculpture Park
MoMa PS1
Washington Square Park / Arch
Little Italy / Eataly
Cross the Brooklyn Bridge to the…
Brooklyn Bridge Park, I wanted to surprise them with a friend in common there.

Everybody knows how difficult it is finding a parking spot in NYC, so we decided to make the trip on foot and public transportation. It also makes every street and train taken in the city the scenarios of our act. We left my car in a parking lot near the Harrison PATH Station. The meter only takes 10 hours, which means we had to fit everything to make it back on time.

We successfully arrived to the Grand Central Terminal, our first stop. I loved it, and if my friends didn’t, then I don’t know what kind of taste they have. XD

After that we walked to the Love Sculpture. We found out that a similar sculpture with the word HOPE was nearby, so why not? We made it the next stop.

Getting to the 3rd stop, the Socrates Sculpture Park, we got lost and went the opposite direction. When we finally got in the right path, a pedestrian told us we had to get out in the wrong station. There was no reception on our cell phones, and we trusted him. After I checked again where we had to stop, we went back in the train.

Guess what? The train didn’t stop where we were supposed to! We had to add 45 minutes walking + an hour or so we already had going the wrong way, to our destination route, and the meter in the parking lot was running. Walking through the park, we found out that it wasn’t as fabulous as the reviews.

We were forced to cut the 4th stop, MoMa PS1. We needed at least 2 hours to go, see everything in the museum, and get back on time. Instead, we jumped to number 6 and headed to Eataly (hungry, as you can imagine).

It is very nice, I loved the environment from inside out, but I guess its not a place to go with rush or suffering from starvation. The waiting time was quite a wait for our hunger. We ended up eating in a regular fast food chain. I can’t consider this visit as valid to write it off from my list, so I will ale it my mission to go back to this place with more time. Little Italy will remain pending as well, as Eataly wasn’t as close to the main entrance as I thought.

After resting, eating and charging our cell phones, I spoke to my friend in Brooklyn. She wasn’t going to be able to meet with us at the Brooklyn Bridge Park. Still we had the hope to go and see the 18 brand-new sculptures by Danish artist Jeppe Hein. I had until December to see them, but they didn’t.

When taking the train to the Washington Square Park, a band was playing in the station. It was amazing! So coordinated, simple, spontaneous, energetic… It was so exciting that people started dancing to complete the perfect concert! I almost joined them too.

Arriving to the Washington Square Park, another act was being performed, a couple was doing yoga, and an artist was doing a pretty good job on the floor. Meanwhile, I was trying to hold a pose to look like I was resting in the arch, everybody was laughing at me. A guy even offered to hold me, how generous!

My sister in law did me the favor of putting more time on the meter, thanks God. Still, we were tired to continue as planned.

We were also invited in the process to the Harbor Lights Cruise for free, but my phone was off, with no battery again. How convenient.

For the perfect end, I’m only pending to say: We had a blast! On our way to every stop we passed through other important places, but we had have been there before, so we didn’t stop. Places such as The Freedom Tower, Rockefeller Center, Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, and can’t leave behind the art in the walls we encountered.

En honor al # 3

: Grand Central Terminal

Como dijo una vez Jess C. Scott, los amigos son los familiares que elejimos. El pasado fin de semana, dos miembros de mi familia por elección, vinieron de visita desde República Dominicana.

Conocí a Steph (mi morena) cuando fui a tomar mi examen de admisión en el INTEC, universidad de la cual nos graduamos. En mi primera clase en la universidad conocí a Jelisse, mi diario y agenda humana durante mi vida de estudiante. Nos hicimos inseparables, y desde entonces siempre nos sentamos una al lado de la otra, estudiamos juntas y finalmente nos graduamos con los más altos honores.

Dado que eran mi salva vidas durante el proceso de llevar a cabo el #3, obtener un título universitario, decidí dedicar esta publicación y nuestras aventuras del pasado fin de semana a este logro.

Mi prima y casi hermana Jeimy, también se unió a nosotras en el viaje de este fin de semana inolvidable. NOTA: Ella fue de gran ayuda en mi vida de estudiante por igual.

Todo comenzó el jueves por la noche, a las 11:30 PM, cuando Jelisse llegó a mi casa. Estaba tan emocionada por lo que estaba por venir que, en esa misma hora, viajamos a una hora de mi casa a buscar a Steph . Este mini viaje por carretera nos trajo de vuelta a casa a las 2:00 de la mañana, para tomar una pequeña siesta hasta las 7:00 am. Que mas da, ¡Somos jóvenes!

En base en los lugares que ninguna de nosotras había visitado antes, el viaje fue planeado de la siguiente manera: 1. Grand Central Station 2. Escultura LOVE 3. Sócrates Sculpture Park 4. MoMa PS1 5. Washington Square Park / Arco 6. Little Italy / Eataly 7. Cruzar el puente de Brooklyn para el … 8. Brooklyn Bridge Park, quería sorprenderlas con una amiga en común allí.

: Waiting for the train

Todo el mundo sabe lo difícil que es encontrar un parqueo en la ciudad de Nueva York, así que decidimos hacer el viaje a pie y en transporte público. De esta manera también haríamos de todas las calles y trenes tomados en la ciudad los escenarios de nuestro acto. Dejamos mi carro en un estacionamiento cerca de la estación Path en Harrison. El medidor sólo toma 10 horas, lo que significa que teniamos que apresurar todo para regresar en ese tiempo.

Llegamos con éxito a la Grand Central Terminal, nuestra primera parada. A mi me encantó, y si a mis amigas no, entonces no sé qué tipo de gusto tendrán. XD Después de eso nos fuimos a la Escultura LOVE (amor). Nos enteramos de que una escultura similar con la palabra HOPE (esperanza) estaba cerca, así que ¿por qué no? La hicimos la próxima parada.

De camino a la tercera parada, el Socrates Sculpture Park, nos perdimos y nos fuimos en dirección opuesta. Cuando finalmente tomamos el camino correcto, un peatón nos dijo que teníamos que salir en la estación equivocada. No teniamos recepción en nuestros teléfonos celulares, por lo que confiamos en él. Después de verificar la parada correcta, volvimos a tomar el tren.

: Socrates Sculpture Park

¿Adivinen que? El tren no se detuvo en la estación que estaba supuesto! Tuvimos que agregar 45 minutos caminando + más o menos una hora que duramos perdidas a nuestro viaje, y el medidor en el estacionamiento estaba corriendo.

Caminando por el parque, nos dimos cuenta que no era tan fabuloso como decian las críticas. Nos vimos obligadas a cortar la cuarta parada, MoMa PS1. Necesitábamos al menos 2 horas para ir, ver todo en el museo, y volver a tiempo. En su lugar, saltamos al número 6 y nos dirigimos a Eataly (hambrientas, como se puedrán imaginar).

Es muy bonito, me encantó el ambiente de adentro hacia afuera, pero supongo que no es un lugar para ir con prisa o con mucha hambre. El tiempo de espera era demasiado para nuestra hambre. Terminamos comiendo en una cadena de restaurantes regular de comida rápida. No puedo considerar esta visita como válida para marcarlo en mi lista, así que voy a hacer mi misión volver a este lugar con más tiempo. Little Italy también quedará pendiente, pues Eataly no estaaba tan cerca a la entrada principal como yo pensaba.

Después de descansar, comer y cargar nuestros teléfonos celulares, hablé con mi amiga en Brooklyn. Ella no iba a poder juntarse con nosotras en el Brooklyn Bridge Park. Aun así teníamos la esperanza de ir a ver las 18 nuevas esculturas del artista danés Jeppe Hein. Yo tenía hasta diciembre para verlas, pero ellas no.

Al tomar el tren hasta el Washington Square Park, una banda tocaba en la estación. ¡Fue increíble! Tan coordinada, simple, espontánea, enérgica… Era tan emocionante que la gente comenzó a bailar para completar el concierto perfecto. Casi me uní a ellos también.

Cuando llegamos al Arrco del Washington Square Park, otro acto estaba siendo presentado, una pareja estaba haciendo yoga, y un artista estaba ilusttrando su arte en el suelo. Mientras tanto, yo estaba tratando de mantener una pose para parecer que estaba descansando en el arco, todo el mundo se reía de mí. Un chico incluso se ofreció a sostenerme, ¡Qué Generoso!

Mi cuñada me hizo el favor de poner más tiempo en el medidor, gracias a Dios. Aún así, estábamos cansadas para continuar como estaba previsto. También nos invitaron en el proceso para el Crucero Harbor Lights gratis, pero mi teléfono estaba apagado, sin batería otra ves. Que conveniente. Para el final perfecto, sólo queda por decir: La pasamos súper! En nuestro camino a cada parada pasamos por otros lugares importantes, pero ya habíamos estado allí antes, así que no nos detuvimos. Lugares como The Freedom Tower, el Rockefeller Center, la Catedral de San Patricio, y no se pueden dejar atrás el arte que nos encontramos en algunas paredes.
