Did you play the lotto yet? / ¿Ya jugaste la lotería?

Near the building I work there is a food truck I visit when I don’t have time to prepare a meal for the day.

There I made a friend, let’s call him John Doe. The day we met he suggested for me to play the lotto every time I get paid, that way I have a chance of not having to go back to work and be free to do whatever I want. I told him that I’m not lucky when it comes to those kind of things. I do not like leaving things to chance, but I didn’t want to be rude to a person I just met either. Then he asked me:

John Doe: Do you ever play it? How many times have you tried it?

Rose: No, I only did once.

John Doe: How do you expect to win the prize if you never play?!

At that moment I could only laugh. He had a good point though.

Now every time we see each other, his greetings are: “Hey amiga (friend), Did you play the lotto yet?”

Later I started thinking, life as well is a lottery game, and you never know what is going to happen after you do something new. If you don’t buy the ticket (try whatever you think might work, look for the things you want), you’ll never win any prize. You’ll probably win, or not. You’ll only know after you play the game, not before.

What are you doing to change the things you don’t like in your life? Have you ever tried? How many times? Do you think you tried hard enough? Is the fear of losing holding you back from doing what you want? Are you afraid to go outside of the box? Did you play the lotto yet?

After taking the chance with publishing my blog, I kept thinking about taking a chance with playing the lotto. I bought 3 tickets for the NJ Lottery and spent 4 dollars. Guess what? I won the Lotto! 3 dollars (actually lost 1), but I won. With those 3 I bought 2 more tickets, and won again! The 4 dollars I invested in the beginning. I didn’t become a millionaire, but I got my money back.

I’m not inviting you to play the lotto or enter the gambling world. NOT AT ALL! Let me remind you again, the point of this story is to invite you to go after the things you don’t try for the fear of losing.

Now I don’t want to tell John that I played the lotto or how little I won, so he never stops asking me when we meet “Do you play the lotto yet?”. He reminds me of all the tickets in the lottery of life that I’m pending to buy.

¿Ya jugaste la lotería?

Cerca del edificio donde trabajo hay un camión de comida que visito cuando no tengo tiempo para preparar una comida para el día.

Allí hice un amigo, vamos a llamarlo Fulanito. El día que nos conocimos él me sugirió jugar la lotería cada vez que me paguen, de esa manera tendría la oportunidad de no tener que volver a trabajar y ser libre de hacer lo que quiera. Le dije que yo no tengo suerte cuando se trata de ese tipo de cosas. No me gusta dejar las cosas al azar, pero tampoco quería ser grosera con una persona que acababa de conocer. Entonces me preguntó:

Fulanito: ¿Alguna vez la haz jugado? ¿Cuántas veces lo has tratado?

Rosely: No, sólo una vez lo intenté.

Fulanito: ¿Cómo esperas ganar el premio si nunca juegas?!

En ese momento sólo podía reír. Sin embargo tenía un buen punto.

Ahora cada vez que nos vemos me saluda de la siguiente manera: “Oye amiga, ¿Ya jugaste la lotería?”

Más tarde empecé a pensar, la vida también es una lotería, y nunca se sabe lo que va a pasar después de hacer algo nuevo. Si no compras el billete (pruebas lo que piensas que podría funcionar, buscas las cosas que quieres), nunca ganarás ningún premio. Si lo compras es probablemente ganes, o no. Sólo se sabrá después de lanzarte y jugar, no antes.

¿Qué estás haciendo para cambiar las cosas que no te gustan de tu vida? ¿Alguna vez lo has intentado? ¿Cuantas veces? ¿Crees que has intentado lo suficiente? ¿Es el miedo a perder lo que te detiene de hacer lo que quieres? ¿Ya jugaste la lotería?

Después de tomar la oportunidad con la publicación de mi blog, me quedé pensando en tomar una oportunidad con la lotería. Compré 3 billetes para la Lotería de Nueva Jersey, y pagué 4 dólares. ¿Adivina que? Me gané la lotería! 3 dólares (en realidad perdí 1), pero gané. Con los 3 dólares ganados compré 2 billetes más, y de nuevo gané! Los 4 dólares que invertí al principio. No me hice millonaria, pero recuperé mi capital.

No estoy invitándote a jugar la lotería o entrar en el mundo de las apuestas. ¡DE NINGÚN MODO! Permíteme recordarte una vez más, el punto de esta historia es invitarte a ir detrás de las cosas que no tratas por el temor de perder.

Ahora no quiero decirle a Fulanito que he jugado la lotería o lo poco que gané, así no dejará de preguntarme cuando nos veamos “¿Ya juegaste a la lotería?”. Él me recuerda todos los billetes en la lotería de la vida que me faltan por comprar.
